Organized in October 2001, Embellishments is a civic handbell ensemble based in Birmingham, Alabama. This group consists of 17 auditioned musicians, directed by Phyllis Kirk. Members include 8 directors of handbell choirs. Embellishments plays six+ octaves of Schulmerich Bells, seven octaves of Malmark Chimes, two octaves of Petit and Fritsen bells, and various other instruments. Open auditions are held every January. Experience in ringing bells, knowledge of techniques and music reading ability are required.
Embellishments plays a variety of music, including classical, popular, old-time favorites written for other media and also music composed for handbells. They currently have 5 CDs available with a variety of music. Embellishments is grateful to Shades Valley Presbyterian Church for the use of their facility for rehearsals and Canterbury United Methodist Church for the use of their facility for recording.
Our classic Holiday Concert is usually the first Sunday in December, and the Spring Concert is usually in April. Concerts will be held in different locations. In the near future we plan to perform at Huffman Baptist Church in Center Point, Christ Church United Methodist near Spain Park, and The Oaks on Parkwood in Bessemer.
